From the executive board
New academic code of conduct
The University of Bern now has an academic code of conduct that builds on existing UniBE directives and guidelines. Heike Mayer, Vice-Rector Quality and Sustainable Development, explains the reasons for its introduction.
Ms Mayer, who is the Academic Code of Conduct aimed at?
Heike Mayer: The Academic Code of Conduct is aimed at all members of the University of Bern - including academic, administrative and technical staff as well as students. It represents a clear commitment to shared values that should guide the behavior and actions of all members of the University.
Why do we need an Academic Code of Conduct?
This Academic Code of Conduct has been developed in response to the politically turbulent times that the academic world is currently facing. Universities are under pressure from various sides and the university management is aware that this pressure must be withstood. With the introduction of this Code of Conduct, the University of Bern is setting a so-called public example of the values for which it stands, and it is intended to serve as a guide for the university community. A clearly formulated code is important in order to promote trust both internally and externally, particularly in view of growing social expectations of science and academia.
What are the main objectives of the Code? What does the executive board of the university hope to achieve?
Academic freedom is a fundamental value of this new Code of Conduct and forms the central basis for independent, critical and innovative teaching and research. Accordingly, the university management does not take an official position on general political issues unless they directly affect the academic context or academic policy and are therefore essential for the functioning of the university as a higher education institution. The Academic Code of Conduct serves as an important guide for all members of the university, as it also has a preventative effect against misconduct and at the same time strengthens employees' identification with basic academic values. In this way, it helps to consolidate the University of Bern as a credible and responsible institution.
What expectations does the Executive Board of the University have of its employees?
The Executive Board of the University expects all employees to actively implement the principles set out in the Code. These include academic integrity, fairness, openness, respect and responsible conduct in research, teaching and leadership. The Code is intended not only to lay down rules, but also to promote a positive, inclusive and trusting university culture. The University of Bern is committed to equal opportunities, protects the personal integrity of all members and firmly rejects discrimination, hatred and violence. All members are expected to treat each other professionally and respectfully, while managers are expected to lead the way with empathy, responsibility and fairness.
