Heat-related deaths affected people over 65 years of age in nearly 90 percent of the cases. The number of deaths was generally higher among women than men. Among all subgroups, older women had the highest mortality rate.

Lead author Ana Vicedo-Cabrera from the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) and the Oeschger Center for Climate Research (OCCR) at the University of Bern recommends that authorities optimize existing plans of action to protect against heat. According to the study results "At current rates of warming, a hot summer like 2022 will already become an average summer in the coming decades."
